Writing Strategy
I think I’ve settled on part of a writing strategy, though I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to sustain it because at this moment I’m not able to afford sustaining life.
Here’s the strategy: I’ll post general commentary–which, at this point, appears to be film commentary–first on my ProfessorTom’s Commentary SubStack. I will then, a day or so later, cross-post to my Medium Publication, ProfessorTom’s Film Reviews and Sundry if it’s about film.
I may want to review books at some point. (I’ve got one or two that I’m reading or have recently read I may want to say something about, I’m not sure.) The “and Sundry” title of the Medium publication may give me enough cover for book reviews/discussion; we’ll have to see.
I will say that so far, it appears that writing about film and television doesn’t have a large audience on Medium. The jury is still out about the audience for said content on SubStack. I really need more readers on both platforms to have good enough data to see where film, TV show and book reviews/discussions land.
I want to make a go of Encyclopedia Reading which I will post both on SubStack and Medium. And while inspiration is seen as something of a dirty word in writer’s circles a la “real writers don't wait for inspiration”, I’ve got an idea for a starter post for the series.
For those of you who follow my ProfessorTom SubStack, you may know that I was posting a daily Today in History utilizing several sources. I stopped because I realized that the reason I had attracted a following on that particular SubStack is that I promised the encyclopedia reading but then never delivered.
Life got in the way. (Sneak peak at an upcoming SubStack article.)
I have other writing projects I want to work on, but I also need to break my habit of talking about things before I do them. Suffice it to say I’ve got plenty to write about and even more to research so I can write about certain topics.
For now, I’ll leave you with two pieces I’ve published recently:
