Watching the Writer Work, Day 3

When working doesn't look like work

A summary of my day yesterday would look like I didn’t do any work. And I wouldn’t necessarily argue with you, even though I did do something in service of the work I intended to do.

I didn’t make my pitch yesterday, I can do that today. It’s an open invitation with no closure date.

I did go see Oppenheimer for a fourth time in IMAX to refresh my memory before writing a review of the film. I didn’t start typing the review, but I did take some time to remain in the mood of the film after I left the theater. Alas, no words or ideas came to me. I think the review has to be a straightforward review, and I think it may turn out to be a relatively dull piece. Unfortunately, not everything we do is exciting even if we’re excited to do it.

I wound up not publishing Better Every Day yesterday not because of cowardice, but because I ran out of time. I mean, yes, I wound up trying to watch another film I’d already seen before to relax and let my subconscious work on the Oppenheimer review. Alas, I fell asleep while the film was playing.

I’ve always preferred to stay awake until I can’t hold my eyes open because that means I won’t have to lay in bed waiting to get to sleep. I’ll just sleep.

Late to Bed, Early to Rise

According to my phone (based on data from my watch) I got 6hr and 51 minutes of sleep.

It may have been only 7 hrs of sleep, but it was the best 7 hrs I’ve had in a while.

I wasn’t thrilled that I got only 7 hrs of sleep, but I was awake and alert at 0530. I tried to go back to sleep, but I was really struggling with that notion. So I decided to get up and start my day.

Breakfast not at Tiffany’s

When I did, I found that there was an update on a story I’m working on, so I dug into that. Turns out that even though I was playing a 2hr 18minute video on 1.75x, I still haven’t completed it.

I did wind up grabbing some breakfast this morning even though I wasn’t hungry. I did this mainly to avoid feeling lightheaded and shaky on caffeine only.

In addition to going through the updates, I also wrote today’s edition of Better Every Day; see Card 312 Shower Meditation.

The Remains of the Day

My tasks for the rest of the day are as follows:

  • Finish update video

  • Pitch Article Idea (this may include writing the article first)

  • Write Oppenheimer review

  • Work on Sound of Metal discussion (I can’t say it will be a review per se as I want to talk about various moments in the time; it will contain spoilers)

Now It’s Your Turn

For my writing friends in the audience, how has your writing went thus far during the week?

For my non writing friends, how has your week went? What did you hope to accomplish this week?

P. S.

I meant to mention the fact that I ultimately didn’t write Card 311 of Better Every Day yesterday not because I was avoiding it, but because the day got away from me and I think of that series as a daily writing exercise.

But I tell you what: if you’re interested and really want to hear that story, I’ll make it a subscriber only story if we get to 10 Annual subscribers by Monday morning.
